Jeremy Renner: Helping Female Co-stars Earn Equal Pay Is “Not My Job”
It’s not his problem, he says.
Actresses Jessica Chastain, Emma Watson and Rooney Mara each applauded Lawrence’s essay, and unlike Renner, Cooper said he’s willing to team up with his female co-stars to negotiate salaries before they begin filming for movies.
Male actor Bradley Cooper, who also was in American Hustle, spoke out about the pay difference for female actresses and said that because of this issue, he will now negotiate for pay for future roles together with any female co-stars before the film is produced.
Jeremy Renner is catching heat over a recent interview where he said it’s “not his responsibility” for female co- stars to make a higher salary. I’m a performer and I know human behavior. “When it comes to that sort of stuff I let other people deal with that”, the 44-year-old added.
“American Hustle” actors Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner speak on a panel at AMC Lincoln Square Theater on December 7, 2013 in New York City.
He continued, “I do what I’m good at, that’s what I focus on”.
Being that Lawrence is one of the most powerful actresses, with two hot franchises and an Oscar under her belt, the essay got major traction, and reignited the conversation of how unfairly women are treated in Hollywood.
“It was a joke – off-colour or whatever – but yeah, I’m unapologetic about a lot of things and I got in a lot of Internet trouble!” he said at the time by way of showing contrition.
‘If anything, I’m sure they were commended for being fierce and tactical, while I was busy worrying about coming across as a brat and not getting my fair share’.
American Hustle earned more than $251million worldwide following its release in January a year ago.
