Jerome Boateng rates Bayern teammate Lewandowski ahead of Dortmund’s Aubameyang
“Leipzig are no flash in the pan”, he said at the post-match press conference.
Bayern controlled long stretches but could not break down Dortmund’s defense.
Hummels will be in for a frosty reception having followed the path of Robert Lewandowski by leaving Dortmund for Bayern; this is the first league return to his former stomping ground.
“We just have to play our game”. Dortmund’s injury list is a little lighter than Bayern’s as they should have a full compliment of players available.
As risky as Tuchel’s audacious 3-4-3 lineup looked from the get-go, it paid dividend as Dortmund were able to absurd all of the pressure that Bayern threw at them after Aubameyang had grabbed the opener in just the 11th minute.
Mainz beat Freiburg 4-2 at home, while Augsburg and Hertha Berlin played to a 0-0 draw.
Words also to live by for Dortmund, who define themselves as a possession-oriented team under Tuchel and should at least in theory be better in keeping the ball away from the league leaders than any other side in the league. His pace was frightening at times although he will be a relieved man after missing three good opportunities in the second period. There are injury concerns for both teams. It would be foolish for Bayern Munich to dismiss RB Leipzig at this point.
Bayern have gone undefeated in their first 10 games, despite injuries to key players such as Jerome Boateng and Arjen Robben, something Klopp has great respect for. Reus has finished his rehab but can’t make a comeback to the field before late December.
Robben was injured while playing for the Netherlands against Luxembourg last week but had hoped to be fit. Bayern have had a near ideal start to the Bundesliga season and despite of that head coach Carlo Ancelotti is taking nothing for granted ahead of Der Klassiker and took time out before the match to praise his opposite number, while also suggesting they may have a few weaknesses in defence. Also, Thomas Mueller’s goal draught in the Bundesliga will be a matter of concern for the manager.
As a number of big names are set to take the field after the worldwide break, we expect an end-to-end match on Saturday.
That said, Bayern Munich are still the best team in the Bundesliga when they start to click.
Bayern Munich need to put in a top class performance against Dortmund to clinch a win. It’s not as if Bayern Munich are suddenly very bad.
