Jerome Boateng says Bayern Munich can win Champions League this season
Bayern Munich got their quest for a fourth straight Bundesliga title off to an emphatic start with a 5-0 win over Hamburg on Friday night.
Pep Guardiola wants to see Bayern Munich reach at least the last four of the Champions League in what could be his final season in charge of the German giants.
“Of course there is a big competition at his position but we all know how long his contract is – he has two more years”.
“But I don’t want me to be the focus”. Unfortunately, this trend won’t end this season even though the controversy between Pep Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy continues to brew, with the manager constantly fielding questions about his job status and inability to match the treble achieved by his predecessor Jupp Heynckes in 2013.
“We switched things around a bit at half-time and we improved after that”. It has progressed from third to first division in successive seasons but its limited budget and a squad of castoffs from other clubs make Darmstadt the top candidate for relegation.
Ingolstadt include Australia striker Matthew Leckie, who scored seven goals to help them win the second division title last season.
The arrivals of Arturo Vidal and Douglas Costa have strengthened Bayern further over the close season, making them firm favourites for the title, however Low believes they will face a tougher challenge in 2015-16.
“Maybe he thinks that there is a price where Bayern will start to ruminate”.
Until now Guardiola – after some differences of opinion with Bayern’s bosses like Rummenigge and Matthias Sammer – refused to speak about his future and has said it will happen in a few months.
Therefore, Costa putting his best foot forward in his Bundesliga debut was extremely important toward his career at Bayern.
Guardiola also said he expects Vidal, back in Germany where he previously played for Bayer Leverkusen, to add some bite to Bayern’s midfield. De Bruyne was voted Bundesliga’s top player last season but has been linked with a move to English Premier League side Manchester City. To make matters worse, Hamburg already suffered a disappointing defeat to a fourth division team in the first round of the German Cup.
German clubs are set to break the Bundesliga record for transfer spending in a single summer.
