Jerry Jones: Demoted Tony Romo still has future with Cowboys
FRISCO, Texas (AP) – Dak Prescott’s interaction with his new backup wasn’t much different after Tony Romo’s heartfelt speech that conceded the Cowboys’ starting job to the rookie quarterback.
Rumors are circulating that Tony Romo will have a new employer in 2017 with Dak Prescott entrenched as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.
So when I told Stephen Jones, the Cowboys chief operating officer, I’d heard Romo privately asked for the chance to wrest the job back, Jones acknowledged that with deference.
“Craig didn’t come out in the paper and say, ‘I should be playing, ‘ and I didn’t either”, Staubach said. Prescott told reporters Romo’s statement was “more for y’all than for me or for this team”.
“This is everybody’s team”.
I hope he’ll forgive me for this, but I have very little sympathy for a man who is 36, looking back fondly at his younger years and so unhappy now because he’s older. “I would rather go to a circus, a carnival, a fair or even a medieval festival and watch cotton candy be made before I watch Justin Tucker and the other guy practice kicking”, Smith joked.
The Cowboys are not taking away snaps from Prescott; but adding snaps at the end of each team period. Instead of us covering how Romo was dumped in favor of a fourth-round rookie out of Mississippi State, we’re all saying what a great team guy he is. Romo is under contract through 2019 and he is slated to make $14 million next season while counting $24.7 million against the salary cap. It may be his darkest place ever, but I know millions of Americans who live in an even darker place.
“Roger will still get work, but he needs to play better on special teams and play better on offense”, McAdoo said. “For every high school kid out there, or every college player, there is greatness in being the kind of teammate who truly wants to be a part of a team”. Things can quickly change in the National Football League, and for the Cowboys their focus remains on their upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The father of two didn’t become the starting quarterback of “America’s team” just because he wanted that position, he became the starting quarterback because he started working towards his dream when he was just a kid. Again, we’re focusing on today and Tony and I have a really good understanding of where his focus is right now.
“Our focus is getting ready to play the Ravens”, Garrett said. “[Romo] is preparing himself. So we’ll continue to approach it that way and he’ll take full advantage of the opportunities he gets”.
BRINGING THE LUMBER: The overshadowed Dallas defense faltered late in a 35-30 win over Pittsburgh after steady improvement most of the season. But now he can go to Jones in the offseason and demand a trade if he wants because he knows how financially cumbersome it would be to either cut or keep Romo.
“We’ve been together a long time and Tony’s been hurt before”, Witten said.
