Jerry Jones: No idea on Cowboys’ top pick, committed to Romo
“We’re just going to do it for preventative”, said Romo, appearing with his family at a promotional event in Grapevine, Texas, for “The Lego Movie 4D: A New Adventure at Legoland.” on Saturday.
Tony Romo is hoping a plate inserted near his left collarbone will end his injury woes.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told ESPN he’s planning on Romo being the team’s quarterback for the next 4-5 seasons. The Cowboys got a glimpse of how the other half lives this season, struggling with poor quarterback play from a string of backup-level players while Romo was on the sidelines for most of the year.
Romo suffered a broken collarbone twice a year ago and missed 12 games as the Cowboys finished 4-12. After all, with Romo under center, the Cowboys might be bound for the playoffs. At the same time, Jones acknowledged he might be tempted to take Cal quarterback Jared Goff or North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz.
Jones understands the thought process of taking a flier on a quarterback at No. 4, making this a unique opportunity to select a successor for Romo.
That sure sounds like Jones is saying the Cowboys won’t use the fourth overall pick on a quarterback, as some expect them to do.
“The only difference is we have in house in Romo the person that I believe will be doing the heavy lifting for us at quarterback and for the team for the next four or five years”, Jones said.
On Saturday, Jones also discussed the possibility of selecting a quarterback later in the draft. He injured it initially in Week 2 at Philadelphia, and again in his second game back against Carolina on Thanksgiving.Romo, who turns 36 in April, also dealt with the injury in 2010. Ahead of them in the draft order are the quarterback-starved Cleveland Browns, who could likely take one of the top signal callers available. An addition on defense could help resurrect those Super Bowl dreams Jones had going into the 2015 season.
“I think it’s important for us to see the X-Ray, and we’ll make some decisions from there”, Garrett said.
