Jerry Seinfeld puts 18 of his Porsche cars on the trading block
A selection of Porsches from the Jerry Seinfeld Collection will be among the headline offerings at the 2016 Gooding and Company Amelia Island auction, scheduled for Friday, March 11th at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Florida.
Comedian and car-show host Jerry Seinfeld is parting with a trio of his prized Porsches – the first of multiple vehicles from his collection that could be headed to auction.
David Gooding, President of Gooding & Company, said: “These superb examples from the collection of Jerry Seinfeld… epitomize the highest of quality and pedigree”.
The Porsche 550 has a storied racing history, and it’s also the vehicle that actor James Dean crashed and died in at the age of 24.
Seinfeld has confirmed he will be putting up a 1955 Porsche 550 with an estimate of $5-6 million, a 1958 Carrera Speedster for $2-2.5 million, and a 1974 Carrera for $1.2-1.5 million.
“I just love cars”.
Jerry Seinfeld himself said “I just love cars”.
“Most high-end sports cars remind me of Halloween costumes”, he told a German newspaper, likening these cars to masks their owners are wearing.
But even someone with the Porsche obsession of Seinfeld, and the resources to feed it, must experience some “shrinkage” of his collection at times. The 1958 356 Carrera Speedster, reportedly one of only 151 models built, should net between $2 and $2.5 million.
However, the unique provenance of a “Seinfeld Porsche” typically means it will cost far more than a classic auto that does not also happen to belong to a comedy legend. To drum up early interest, they will be displayed at Gooding & Company’s annual Scottsdale auctions, beginning January 27.
The 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera is expected to sell for $1.2 million.
Seinfeld, tooling around L.A. with Shandling in a beige 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo, visited the NY street set of “Seinfeld” for the first time since the NBC show ended its run in 1998.
