Jesse Matthew indicted for murder in death of Morgan Harrington
Jesse Matthew Jr. will be charged with first-degree murder and abduction with intent to defile in Albemarle County in connection with the 2009 disappearance and death of Morgan Harrington.
The 20-year-old Virginia Tech student vanished after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville.
In November 2014, police forensically linked Matthew to Harrington. Sentencing in that case is set for October . 2.
Gil received the news Tuesday afternoon and while it is a step in the right direction, she admitted and acknowledged her family has a very a long road ahead of them.
The former hospital worker and cab driver also was accused of sexually assaulting students at Liberty University and Christopher Newport University when he was a defensive lineman on their football teams more than a decade ago.
“I have no category for him”, said Gil.
Matthew was served with the indictments on Tuesday at the Albemarle County jail, where he is awaiting trial for the abduction and murder of Northern Virginia native Hannah Graham.
Gil found it hard to put her emotions into words. “There was some information that was obtained over the course of the previous year and the investigation intensified and really we just looked at it in terms of what was the best timing for this case”.

Matthew is now charged in the death and 2009 disappearance of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.
“It’s hard to be happy, because you know your daughter is murdered”, she added. Those cases were dropped when the women declined to prosecute, officials have said. He has been charged with capital murder in her death and is eligible for the death penalty.
Matthew’s conviction in the Fairfax case will probably not affect trial proceedings in the Graham case unless he decides to take the stand. In that situation, the prosecution can make him tell the court that he has three prior convictions.
