Jessica Williams leaves ‘Daily Show’ but not Comedy Central
Williams told Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview that her departure is bittersweet.
Daily Show host Trevor Noah had Williams seated on the main set at the end of the show on Thursday, telling her, “You are the coolest, most awesome person”. And it featured a tearful sendoff from host Trevor Noah and the correspondents.
No matter what Williams goes on to do, The Daily Show knows it’s losing a real talent.
Williams started on The Daily Show under Jon Stewart’s watch and was the youngest comedian ever hired by the show. Williams says the show will be about a woman in her 20s who is a self-described feminist and believes she is “woke” but is still trying to get her shit together. “I’m excited to, in a silly and amusing way, be able to explore ideas of feminism and race and LGBT issues”. She met up with a group of former Bernie Sanders supporters who have decided that they’ll vote for Donald Trump, and simply knocked down all their arguments for making the switch. I feel like thats a big part of the work that I got to do on the show. Do you think this is bad news for The Daily Show?
Just this year, Williams took on the sexist debate between Hillary supporters and Sanders supporters.
While reminiscing about her time on the late-night series, Williams said that her favorite moments came when she was able to make Stewart laugh, though she admitted that she hasn’t spoken to him since making the decision to leave.
“I’ll go first because I’m the white guy”, Jordan Klepper joked. That being said I am super not right for it, but there are quite a few people who are!
“We see her as a great voice – she’s so dynamic and so amusing”. Thankfully, it’s not all sad news, because Williams is leaving to focus on her scripted Comedy Central pilot with Naomi Ekperigin.
The funnywoman is certainly good enough to launch her own show.
