Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis unlikely to play vs. Giants
The Jets looked completely demoralized in the second half, lost the following week at Miami, and missed the playoffs after being in prime position for the Wildcard at 8-5. Coach Tom Coughlin said he will probably get a shot to see if it will help….
“We know what’s ahead of us”, long-snapper Zak DeOssie, one of the few remaining Giants from that championship team, told Reuters in the locker room after Wednesday’s practice.
It’s not the fault of their top cornerback, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who has held opposing quarterbacks to a 34.5 passer rating when they throw his way, according to Stats.
Then there’s Oakland and Buffalo, which are a game back at 5-6.
Just getting one was a big enough task in itself. Moving on to the NY defense, it has some favorable matchups that it may be able to take advantage of as well. Most of the country will be able to witness MVP candidate Cam Newton versus Drew Brees in the FOX late game, with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
“I don’t think so”, coach Todd Bowles said. But I have great confidence in those guys and for me, my focus is going to be down the field, reading coverages, trying to get the ball to receivers. Considering the Jets are first against the run and the Giants are one of five teams that hasn’t rushed for 1,000 yards yet, injuries to the offensive line could make the Giants’ rushing attack obsolete.
“I’m glad that we got back to playing our brand of football (Sunday)”, Fitzpatrick said.
Now, the Jets need to go out and prove it. Their season depends on it.
At the moment, the Jets are 6-5, the Giants are 5-6, and the Eagles are behind both teams with a 4-7 record. That’s having won the championships and having won really over the area for the most part.
Since the AFL-NFL merger was announced in 1966, the Giants have lifted the Lombardi trophy four times and twice in the last eight years. The Giants put together an embarrassing effort in a 20-14 loss at Washington where they couldn’t overcome an early 17-0 deficit due to three Eli Manning interceptions. The New York run defense is a menacing unit. Behind QB Ryan Fitzpatrick’s strong effort, the Jets stay in the thick of the AFC wild-card race. But McAdoo said they’re not polar opposites.
Center Nick Mangold had a similar response. While Gang Green’s secondary is highlighted by some big names, the Giants have a chance to make some big plays in the passing game.
“I don’t think it does at all”, Cromartie said. “It’s just kind of the next step for us”.
Anything stand out to Mangold, though? “So I definitely do remember that”. “But other than that, it was a while ago”. He’s very young. Has he had a productive year over 16 games? Yes.
Let’s just say, the Giants could use a win this week over their same-stadium rivals.
