Jets could take a while tinkering with Hackenberg’s throwing motion
That set up the offense, or so it seemed: first-and-10 on the Giants 15-yard line. He looked sharp throughout the entire drive, moving the Jets up the field easily before the TD pass. The Giants looked very bad, in large part because the Jets defense made them look that way. Brandon Marshall was a surprise scratch before the game with sore hips, Robby Anderson started in his place but he’s no Marshall.
I get it, most people hate Smith.
But he did not dwell on the interception, saying: “Turnovers are gonna happen”. In year’s past, we’ve seen Smith take that type of play and run out-of-bounds and give away ground than getting rid of it. In the second quarter, Fitzpatrick found Eric Decker with a ideal back shoulder throw for a 22-yard touchdown to give the Jets a 7-0 lead.
That was Fitzpatrick’s lone highlight. In the first quarter, Bruce Carter and Rontez Miles broke through the Giants punt coverage. On third-and-6, Fitzpatrick held onto the ball too long and was sacked by former Jet Damon Harrison, who knocked the ball loose. He fumbled the ball, and the Giants recovered. The Jets game against the Giants tonight should serve as a better barometer of where the offense stands, with first-teamers expected to play at least the entire first half. Forte saw early action. He underwent X-rays at the stadium and will go for additional tests Sunday, according to coach Todd Bowles.
“They did some good things in the first half”. “I think he’ll be there”.
“You’ve got to look at it all the same because you don’t want to have a mental letdown”, he said. I thought they got a little more continuity.
Defensively, it was hard to find any negatives. The first-team defense was strong and featured the preseason debut of Muhammad Wilkerson.
Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz played for the first time since 2014, catching a pass for 4 yards. Of course, most of the Jets’ defenders were in the Giants’ backfield as the Big Blue offensive line looked terrible.
“I just need him for opening day”, Bowles said. We played fast. We tricked the quarterback a couple of times. If Geno goes down, were in trouble.
The quarterbacks behind Fitzpatrick did not fare any better. Bowles deflected, saying he would play starter Ryan Fitzpatrick and backup Geno Smith, but that it would be hard to get three quarterbacks playing time with this being the team’s dress rehearsal. Smith will then come in, followed by Petty at some point. It was clearly a desperation throw from Fitz into no-man’s-land that harmlessly hit the turf, but could have easily been a Giants interception.
“It was sweet”, Hackenberg said of the touchdown.
Hackenberg orchestrated a 75-yard drive, capping it off with a attractive touchdown pass to Robby Anderson.
The Jets now have two weeks to iron out their issues before the Bengals come to MetLife Stadium on September 11.
“He proved us wrong”, Marshall said.
