Jets earn New York bragging rights with win over Giants

The New York Giants aren’t out of it mathematically, but there are only so many of these types of losses a team can take.

The only thing that really makes the Giants offense move the ball down the field is the passing game.

A few seconds later, Josh Brown’s 48-yard field goal sailed wide left, giving the Jets a 23-20 overtime victory over the Giants on Sunday.

After the game, cornerback Prince Amukamara talked about the symbolism that accompanies a gesture the Giants make at the beginning of every fourth quarter. That left many questioning Coughlin and wondering whether the Giants (5-7) are headed for a fourth straight season out of the playoffs.

The New York Jets overturn a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to clinch a 23-20 win over the New York Giants in overtime. In overtime they did step up and hold the Jets to a field goal which gave Manning a chance to win or extend in the game, but when you’re up by ten in the 4th quarter, you just have to finish the job. We know we made a bunch of mistakes, and the Giants played well, they put a lot of pressure on Fitzpatrick.

“We score there on fourth-and-2 and we push the score up to where maybe they can’t beat us when we’re up 17, so I stand by it”.

Bowles said of this being the best he has seen Fitzpatrick play this season, “I thought it was great last week as well, so I don’t know if it was the best I’ve seen him, but it was the most poised I’ve seen him in these situations”.

“He was showing faith in us and that’s what you want”, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said. That doesn’t put him in Takeo Spikes territory; poor guy played 219 games without reaching the playoffs.

“There was extra intensity because we needed it and they needed it”, said Jets head coach Todd Bowles. They alternate home and road games the rest of the way against the Titans, Cowboys, Patriots, and Bills.

The Giants’ drive, which lasted 22 snaps and took the team from the 5:03 mark of the third quarter to the 8:50 mark in the fourth, yielded zero points.

On how the team showed poise: “I just think we showed a lot of maturity today”. Ryan Fitzpatrick tossed two of his season-high four touchdown passes to former Dolphin Brandon Marshall, who leads the team with 71 receptions, 931 yards and nine scores. The Jets’ No. 3 ranked defense (323.9 yards per game) will look to capitalize on health issues plaguing the Giants’ offensive line. Out side of that, they have some talented but pretty ineffective players, such as a Rueben Randle, who was benched at the start of the second half, and Andre Williams.

This isn’t the best week to be shorthanded with Odell Beckham Jr.’s sure hands in the picture. It’s something we can’t dwell on. That brought the Giants within six points before Washington milked the clock on the following possession and left Eli Manning and the offense with minimal time.

With the win, the 7-5 Jets snapped a five-game losing streak against the Giants in regular-season games. Even when we kicked the field goal knowing we still had to get a touchdown, defense gets off the field and we go and score a touchdown. Big Blue nearly had a touchdown pass from Manning to Hakeem Nicks on that drive, however Nicks ran his route just short of the goal line on second down and caught the ball just inches shy of the end zone.
