Jets’ Geno Smith punched by teammate, out 6-10 weeks
The report says that Todd Bowles spoke about the situation and said that Smith did not put his hands on Enemkpali and that it came after morning workouts.
The drama between Smith and Enemkpali is reminiscent of the action seen on football dramas like Ballers, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He got cold-cocked, sucker-punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw.
“Something very childish that sixth-graders could have talked about and it had no reason to happen”, he said.
The New York Jets offcial Twitter account confirmed that Ikemefuna Enemkpali has since been released from the team and the organization has signed Javier Arenas.
Bowles said the Jets now are exploring all options, including the possibility of adding another quarterback. “It’s something we don’t tolerate”.
“There’s a maturation process that I don’t think people respect these days”, Smith told the New York Post earlier this month.
It’s an undeniable setback for the Jets from a long-term organizational standpoint, at least based on the hope that Smith would take a step forward and prove to be the answer they hoped for.
But bad leadership for putting himself “in harm’s way” and getting his jaw broken in two places because some other dude snapped and punched his face? The regular-season opener at home against Cleveland on September 13 is five weeks away. He got the starting job as a rookie after Mark Sanchez was sidelined for the year after hurting his shoulder in a preseason game, and mostly struggled.
The third-year quarterback was benched in favor of Michael Vick after throwing three interceptions in a week eight 43-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
You’re not supposed to hit the quarterback during training camp. A sixth-round draft pick in 2014, Enemkpali appeared in six games during his debut season.
