Jets’ Geno Smith punched by teammate, Out 6 to 10 weeks
Bowles says the Jets could add another quarterback, but it appears Ryan Fitzpatrick will assume the starting job.
The New York Jets will be without the services of Geno Smith for eight to ten weeks after a locker room altercation left the starting quarterback with a broken jaw.
There have been reports that Smith put his finger in Enemkpali’s face during an argument before Tuesday’s practice which led to the punch. The coach adds that it had “nothing to do with football” and it was something “very childish”, without going into details.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith broke two bones in his jaw and will need surgery.
“It was something very childish, that sixth-graders could have talked about”, Bowles said. If they want to tell you what happened, they can tell you what happened.
“The team knows it’s something we don’t tolerate”, Bowles said. “You don’t walk up to another man and punch him in the face”.
It was unclear as to whether there had been previous bad blood brewing between Smith and Enemkpali. Nobody in the Jets locker room or front office is saying but Bowles did say that it wasn’t something adults and professionals should get physical over.
This is Smith’s third NFL season.
Geno Smith, JetsWith 34 interceptions to 25 touchdown passes…
In the aftermath of the recent slew of training-camp fights, I’ve found it hard to reconcile the NFL’s beefed-up Personal Conduct Policy with the boys-will-be-boys nonchalance with which the league reacts to players punches other players after the whistle has blown.
Smith threw the first two interceptions of camp on Monday, an impressive stretch that had the quarterback and coaches thinking positively about his prospects for the upcoming season.
Fitzpatrick has 11 years of NFL experience, most recently with the Tennessee Titans, where he started nine games last season.
The Jets, quite promptly, released Enemkpali and picked up cornerback Javier Arenas.
