Jets overcome errors, 10-point deficit to beat Giants in OT
Not only did the Jets beat the Giants on Sunday. Tight end Will Tye had three catches, including a handsome 45-yard catch down the seam, as he and Beckham provided the only offense on the afternoon.
But Sunday’s loss was a ideal example of how what the defense can’t control has come back to kill them this season.
“There was extra intensity because we needed it and they needed it”, said Jets head coach Todd Bowles. “So for us to come from behind and show some grit during the season, that’s the mark of a good team, so we finally got to that point”. I just have to hit that ball like I do every other one.
It came down to the final drive. The Jets’ defense was in disarray, having dedicated two penalties on third-down plays & another on a punt to prolong the Giants’ drive.
“I thought that was the play at the time”, Coughlin said.
“I think there are some things that are off limits”, Marshall told reporters after the game, via ESPN.
Buck Allen had 170 all-purpose yards for the Ravens (4-8) and scored on a 41-yard pass from Schaub, but that was their only touchdown of the game and Justin Tucker missed a field goal that would have put Baltimore in front less than three minutes from time. That ties an National Football League record. The score was 0-0 when Reshad Jones intercepted a pass batted by defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to set up the game’s first score. Hindsight is always 20-20, but a field goal – and a 13-point margin – likely would have made it impossible for the Jets to climb back into the game.
This was about much more than bragging rights. “It’s not easy to do, but he made it look easy”.
As for how he’d feel about another playoff-less year, Tisch said, “I would not be happy with our season ending on January 3”. We had Buffalo in a big game, we didn’t get it done. “We never give up”. Randy Bullock kicked a 31-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime, giving the Jets a stunning 23-20 win Sunday that sent the reeling Giants to their third straight loss.
WR Brandon Marshall on what he said to Fitzpatrick before the Giants’ overtime field goal try… I was glad I was sitting next to him when it happened.
After Chris Ivory fumbled, Brown made a 20-yard Brown field goal.
Fitzpatrick on the game-tying TD pass to Marshall with 27 seconds left in regulation… “The nice thing is that we’ve put ourselves in position where we can start handling that stuff”, who can clinch the North by beating Pittsburgh on December 13 at home. We had New England, we didn’t get it done. The Jets say they knew what was coming on the fourth-and-2 play where Rontez Miles came up with a game-changing interception. The Jets then drove down field and kicked a field to pull within a touchdown. “We’ve still got to play the Jets. We never give up”. “We go out and lay an egg next week, then this feeling goes away and you forget about it”.
The Giants were shut out in the second half after using big plays to a 20-10 lead. “He was right. They missed it”.
Decker said of what Fitzpatrick is like in the huddle, “Same old Fitz, when we go on the ball (he just has) command of the huddle, getting the play out, calm, collective, what a good leader should be”. Whether it was because guys weren’t open I don’t know, but Manning seemed to hesitate in the pocket a few times and hold the ball too long, perhaps contributing to a couple of sacks.
“That dude, he makes my job so easy”, Fitzpatrick said.
“I had tears in my eyes and there were like three or four coaches and three or four players [hugging]”, Marshall said.
BENGALS 37, BROWNS 3 Andy Dalton threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score and the visiting Cincinnati Bengals moved closer to a playoff berth and the AFC North title with a victory over woeful Cleveland, which dropped its seventh consecutive.
