Jets QB Geno Smith laughs off critics as he reports to camp
Geno Smith doesn’t think much of the ESPN.com quarterback survey – a poll of 35 NFL insiders that rated him 32nd for the second year in a row. “It doesn’t matter at this point”. Coach Todd Bowles is calling it a quarterback competition between Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick (even though he acknowledges Smith will get the majority of the first-team reps), but the sense around the team is that Smith is The Guy. “No matter what they rate me, wherever we finish at the end of the year is most important”.
Smith believes in his abilities to turn things around despite entering the 2015-16 campaign with more career interceptions (34) than touchdowns (25). That is till this offseason that will his teammates say exhibit a different one at quarterback.
“It was hilarious last year, too”, Smith said. “Going into my third year, I’m definitely a different player that I was when I came in”.
He added that he is “ready to take on whatever there is for me, being accountable, being a leader”. “It takes a lot of hard work”. “I better not (fail) my drug test”. “I walk into my room after the day is over and it was like, ‘You smell that?!’ Or you’ll just be on the bus and the driver smells like it. I was like oh, man, this is insane”. At an event on Tuesday, Marshall was asked about the tweets and said he was “just having fun” after noticing the constant smell of pot in the air.
