Jets QB Options After the Trade

We liked [Webb] down in Carolina [when Gettleman was GM] in the draft. It belongs to the Jets, too. Even though GM John Dorsey took out a figurative want-ad to proclaim as much at the Scouting Combine a couple weeks ago, I don’t believe it. The Jets had a 5-8 record with McCown as their starter in 2017 and they finished the season 5-11. Has anyone not taken the time out to examine what the Jets gave up? But one of them will likely be available when the Jets pick.

If Darnold goes No. 1, the Giants pass on a quarterback, and the Jets take either Josh Allen or Josh Rosen, there could be a bidding war between the Broncos and the Bills to land the Browns’ fourth pick.

A major source of comfort for Jets fans ought to be the fact that the team is now out of the running to take Baker Mayfield. Only Kirk Cousins has the luxury of knowing the exact amount he will make in his deal. They still have some key pieces of the evaluation that will determine their top choice, including private workouts and visits to the Browns facility. If I were general manager Mike Maccagnan, I would be perfectly satisfied with Allen on my roster, if it comes to that. That counts a million times over for quarterbacks.

After losing to Minnesota in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes at the start of free agency, NY re-signed Josh McCown and agreed to terms with Teddy Bridgewater, each on one-year deals. And then you make that determination and you move forward. They thought they had a decent chance.

The bottom eventually fell out.

Or they can screw it all up by trading back and drafting later in the first round. Maccagnan wanted to do better than that.

While the Jets are still way behind the Patriots, this move could be one that will help them for years to come.

But Mike Maccagnan is exhausted of being stuck in the middle. He threw just two passes last season for the Vikings, including one that was intercepted.

Brandon Beane never panicked and instead stuck to his plan of getting a veteran in the quarterback room ahead of the draft. He would nearly certainly have been available at six. Again: Not breaking news.

Thanks to the Jets’ trade, the Browns, who may have been entertaining taking Penn State running back Saquon Barkley No. 1 overall, now have to take a quarterback since they can’t be sure the one they really want will still be on the board at No. 4. They have their pick of multiple quarterback prospects ready to be ushered in as the 38-year-old Eli Manning’s future replacement. Corner-back Denzel Ward could potentially be in play now as well. The 2017 New York Jets were written off before a ball was snapped, before exceeding expectations in the first half of the season. It was over a century for the Cubs. We’ll see Pro Bowl players emerge we didn’t expect.

Nobody is saying that Darnold can be the guy. The Eagles chose Carson Wentz with that pick.
