Jets rally late in 4th, top Giants in OT
The Jets would be wise to use nickel corner Buster Skrine on OBJ. Skrine has been one of the Jets’ most consistent performers on the back end and is the only player in the secondary that can matchup with Odell’s blazing speed.
Offensively, the Jets dominated the Giants in almost every major statistical category, including time of possession (38:31 to 29:56) and third-down conversions (40 percent to 27 percent).
Fitzpatrick has played 108 career games, a lot of them in Buffalo (when things were dire) and Cincinnati (when things were dire) and some in Tennessee and Houston (maybe not dire, but hardly delightful). “So we’re up 17”. “I still do. I stand by it”. The first was after the Chris Ivory fumble, early in the second quarter.
The score stayed that way until the fourth quarter, before the decision that might haunt the Giants should they miss the playoffs: Giants head coach Tom Coughlin opted against an easy field-goal try from the Jets 4-yard line, and Eli Manning’s attempted fourth-down pass ended up in the hands of Jets safety Rontez Miles, who returned the interception 11 yards. Rookie coach Todd Bowles and the Jets are among five teams in the second flight of the AFC behind New England, Denver and Cincinnati. “We know we made a bunch of mistakes and the Giants played well”. Dime back Dexter McDougle and 2013 first-rounder Dee Milliner, who has yet to play on defense since returning three games ago from short-term IR, are available as well.
And Fitzpatrick’s football other half, Marshall, 31, caught 12 passes for 131 yards and that crucial touchdown. We get in overtime, they drive it down, we stop them, they kick a field goal, we drive it down, we’re in field goal range, but I was thinking more (about scoring a) touchdown to be honest with you. “We score, the game is over”, Pugh said.
Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said of winning in overtime after being down late into the fourth quarter, “I think it was a great team win”.
Fitzpatrick on if this game felt noticeably different from a Jets home game in the same stadium… We’ve bounced around from team to team. We never felt the pressure.
Beckham put up six receptions for 149 yards and his TD on the other side. It’s why the four combined to run 3.1 yards per carry Sunday-not much off their 3.7 average for the season. The previous mark was set by New Orleans’ Marques Colston with 168 in 2006-07. While Jets fans have bragging rights of the city, and control their destiny in hopes to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010. At the break, it was 20-10 Giants.
They gave up Beckham’s 72-yard TD and Harris’ 80-yard punt return for a score, which put the Giants in front 20-10.
No matter how little pass rushing “talent” a defense has, there’s no excuse for letting Ryan Fitzpatrick to throw for close to 400 yards.
-DE Muhammad Wilkerson was noticeably absent from the game in the first quarter.
“That was something we handled in-house”, Bowles said, “and we didn’t put that out there”. “So to come out in a meaningful game, for them to get it done in the fourth quarter, we obviously learned some things”.
Robert Ayers came off a short time later, adding to the lengthy list of injuries.
The offensive line, which got left guard Justin Pugh and center Weston Richburg back this week, is in flux again.
-LT Ereck Flowers, who suffered a sprained ankle in the second half, was spotted leaving the stadium on crutches, his left foot in a walking boot. Pugh moved from left guard to tackle and Dallas Reynolds came in at left guard.
