Jets to sign P Weatherford
So, while it may be viewed as a one-week signing right now, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Weatherford ends up keeping the job if he puts together a strong showing this week.
The Jets have signed former Giants punter Steve Weatherford, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Media’s Kimberly Jones reported.
Quigley has been the Jets’ punter since 2013, and is averaging 42.4 yards per kick this season with a 32.5 net average.
Weatherford didn’t say who he’d be suiting up for and there weren’t any punters listed on any injury reports this week, so his new team was a complete mystery.
It turns out that the Jets were in need of a punter because their regular guy, Ryan Quigley, was downgraded to questionable on Saturday after not being listed on the injury report all week. The 32-year-old Weatherford posted a photo Saturday on Instagram with him, Darrelle Revis and Eric Decker at the Jets’ facility, announcing: “I’m baaaaaaack!!!!”
He was released by the Giants before this season and hasn’t played since. Weatherford was contacted by the Jets around 11:30 a.m. while co-hosting a radio show on ESPN New York 98.7.
He averaged a net of 45 yards per punt on 16 attempts during the 2015 preseason.
