Jewish man stabbed near kosher restaurant in Milan
Italy has boosted security at Jewish sites in Milan after an Israeli Jew was stabbed in the city, officials said.
A witness attempted to intervene but the attacker, whose face was partially covered, managed to escape, sparking a massive police hunt.
He was taken to the city’s Niguarda hospital, where he underwent surgery for wounds to to the face, back, throat and arm.
“The attack took place right next to our community”, sais the co-president of the Jewish community in Milan, Raffaele Basso.
Police said there was no evidence so far to indicate a hate crime and sought to play down the attack. The Simon Wiesenthal Centre wrote to Mr Alfano demanding armed protection at Jewish schools and synagogues. We are well integrated into the city and have no fear…
Graff had reportedly arrived in Milan with his daughter to visit his father-in-law, Hetzkia Levi, a local rabbi of Afghan descent. A few residents in the area also said they heard the attacker shout “I’ll kill you” twice in Italian, La Repubblica reported.
“We are afraid that this is an attempt to mimic the attacks in Israel”, a member of the local Jewish community told the Italian news site, referring to the recent wave of stabbing attacks on civilians and Israeli soldiers. Others maintained that after running away he boarded a getaway vehicle where two accomplices were waiting for him. Police said they are investigating the attack that happened around 8pm on 12 November.
