Jim Furyk Shoots 58
Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open champion and victor of 17 Tour events, said the 58 had to be put into the context of the ultimate goal on the Tour – winning.
Furyk’s 27 on the front nine bested the Travelers Championship nine-hole record by two shots.
For Knox, it was a second triumph of the season after his maiden victory at the WGC – HSBC Champions in November, and will keep him in the thoughts of European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke for next month’s contest at Hazeltine.
Knox birdied 13 and 14, making a couple of 6-foot putts, to take the lead.
Furyk tied for fifth at 11 under.
“No one else can say they’ve done that out here on the PGA Tour”, Furyk said.
Furyk, the 2003 US Open champion, recorded one eagle and 10 birdies on the River Highlands course in Cromwell.

Russell Knox, Jerry Kelly and Russell Henley are the three beneficiaries so far of Berger stalling out, sharing the lead on the back nine in Hartford.

Hours later, Russell Knox curled in a right-to-left 12-foot, 1-inch putt on the 18th hole for a round of 68, the Travelers Championship trophy and $1.18 million check on Sunday. “You couldn’t really quite see it, but I could hear it kind of smack the pin in the hole, like it hopped in”.
“I think it was big for me”. Along with his seventeen PGA Tour wins, he now adds this slice of golfing history to his collection. It all started with my friend Al Geiberger in the 1977 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, in which I also competed. He gained a lot of fans that weekend who cheered heartily as he snatched his second win in the last 10 months in CT.
“I said to my caddy when I was in the bunker, ‘We just have to make one great shot from here, ‘ ” Knox said regarding his chip that landed 12 feet from the pin.
Australian Marc Leishman (270), the 2012 Travelers victor and 36-hole co-leader with Berger, Russell Henley and Van Aswegen, closed with a 66 to tie for ninth with Brooks Koepka.
“What an honor and a privilege to represent the United States, the country that we love very much”, said Watson, who was showered with “USA!” chants from the gallery Sunday.
Furyk had a 59 at Conway Farms in the second round of the 2013 BMW Championship with a bogey on his card.
Low scores were plentiful on a day when Ernie Els made his first ace on the PGA Tour since 2004, using a seven-iron from 171 yards at the 16th. He birdied the 16th to go twelve under par and then parred the 17th and 18th holes.
The 31-year-old Knox rolled in back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15. However, he dropped a 24-foot birdie putt at No. 16 and two-putted for par on the closing holes.
