Jim Schwartz in Town to Meet With Eagles
The Associated Press says the Jacksonville Jaguars are interviewing Schwartz for their vacant defensive coordinator position, too, according to a person familiar with the search. He interviewed with the Jaguars, and the Browns reportedly also have him on their radar. With the Eagles officially announcing Doug Pederson as the team’s new head coach Monday, replacing Chip Kelly, the talk now turns to his staff. Schwartz arrived in Philadelphia around 5 p.m. Schwartz has been serving as a consultant to the league’s officiating department.
The Eagles, however, may well be the frontrunner.
Hiring Schwartz would nearly make it a certainty that the Eagles were returning to a 4-3 scheme.
Essentially Schwartz has his ends line up at the 9-technique, which is wide of the offensive tackle giving the lineman a straight line towards to quarterback.
Schwartz will likely run a 4-3 scheme with the Eagles. They ranked fifth and seventh in yards allowed and eighth and second in points during that span.
Washburn worked under Schwartz from 2001-08 in Tennessee.
Schwartz complied a 29-51 record in four seasons with the Lions, going 0-1 in the postseason, from 2009 to 2013. He joined the Eagles in 2011, but was sacked midway through the 2012 season.
He was out of a job when coach Doug Marrone opted out of his contract.
Manuel has no coordinator experience, and Anarumo finished 2015 as the Dolphins’ interim defensive play-caller.
If Pederson is looking to replicate that dynamic, he could do worse than Schwartz.
This is a phenomenal hire for the Eagles if this report holds true.
