Jimmy Kimmel sends a tweet to Donald Trump, takes jabs at him
While waiting for the speeches to conclude, Kimmel recalls that he and Damon began to notice some commotion with the stage manager onstage, and Damon remarked, “I think they got the victor wrong”.
Kimmel only used the President’s name once, when he thanked Mr Trump for making last year’s controversy about the lack of black actors being nominated seem “less racist”.
“But we’re sitting there, and we notice some commotion going on”, Kimmel continues. And he should have stuck with that formula. “Faye Dunaway made quite a getaway”, Kimmel joked.
On Twitter, viewers called Kimmel out on some major uncomfortable instances that made ethnic groups feel “othered”, or that they don’t belong. Eventually, La La Land ended up with 7 Oscars, falling well short of the previous best record of 11 wins, set by Titanic, Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The world celebrated the achievements of “Moonlight“.
Acceptance speeches were expected to be laced with political commentary throughout the ceremonies.
The whole “feud” started when Kimmel’s show was just starting out and wasn’t quite successful yet.
Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for Moonlight. He adheres to Ahmadiyya, a sect of Islam that has been historically persecuted.
He rejected speculation that he had been pulling a prank. “They didn’t even ask for visitation or anything”, Kimmel said.
Trump, known for tweeting about television ratings, may not be surprised that Sunday’s Oscars garnered the second lowest ratings of every show since 1974.
Backstage, Beatty showed Kimmel the card while Stone told reporters that she’d held onto her cards. The host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” appeared to be burying the hatchet with his longtime foe, but immediately turned the tables. He also has 18-year-old stepdaughter Alexia.
And, speaking of the In Memoriam montage, Kimmel acknowledged there had been a snafu there too.
A free screening of Farhadi’s film The Salesman was staged in front of a packed audience in Trafalgar Square just hours before the Oscars Iranian director Asghar Farhadi took home the Academy Award for best foreign film for his drama The Salesman.
The Academy issued a similar statement, apologizing for the mishap.
