Jimmy Rollins signs with White Sox, wants to be everyday shortstop
The deal is labeled as a minor league contract, worth just $2 Million if Rollins breaks camp with the White Sox.
“The move appeals to us on a number of levels”, general manager Rick Hahn said. “He has definitely been a guy that people look up to and he has been a leader, a hustler, anything you want to put on it that’s positive, he’s done”. The White Sox do have an opening at shortstop after letting Alexei Ramirez walk in free agency.
Despite the accolades and success Rollins has achieved over his 15-year MLB career – all but the last of which came with the Philadelphia Phillies – his production has dropped off in recent years, hence only receiving a minor-league deal and doing so this late into the offseason.
We’re not sure what Rollins was asking for dollars wise, but he was looking for another opportunity to do what he’s done since his rookie season in the big leagues…be a starter. “I’m not throwing around guarantees for anybody”.
Jimmy Rollins is a three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove victor, National League MVP, and World Series champion. “As far as playing time and everything else, we’ll see how that goes out”. The White Sox initially reached out to Rollins’ agent in December and again in January. “2014 was a very quality year, consistent with what he did the bulk of his career”.
Rollins has played nearly exclusively at shortstop during his accomplished career, but Hahn believes his athleticism would play out at second base or third, if needed there.
“I think he’s going to help the young guys as well as play well”, Ventura said.
