Jindal, Christie take the soapbox at Iowa fair

Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie hit the Iowa State Fair Saturday and drew some very interesting responses – from protesters demonstrating against hog crates to a man dressed as an ear of corn who wondered if the New Jersey governor was intimidated by candidate Deez Nuts.

Officers with the Iowa State Patrol quickly took the two men off stage along with a third female protestor who jumped on stage right after. “I vetoed that bill twice in New Jersey, and if it comes to my desk again, I’ll veto it again”, Christie said following the interruption.

Chris Christie has a marathon day planned at the Iowa State Fair on Saturday.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has been campaigning heavily in Iowa as he seeks the Republican presidential nomination.

Christie vetoed a New Jersey bill previous year that would have prohibited the use of the crates, which some saw as an appeal to voters in Iowa, the nation’s top producer of hogs and the lead voting state. “So thank you, Iowa, for that”. Animal rights groups have called them inhumane and some major agriculture companies, including Cargill, have pledged to stop using them.

Christie continued: “Second, let me be really clear, I believe that farmers should be able to make the decisions about how best to raise their livestock, not government bureaucrats”.
