Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman: New mugshot released from Mexican prison where he
Mexico is not directly investigating actors Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo for secretly meeting with drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, but will look into the circumstances, a government spokesman said yesterday.
On Oct.10, after they met, the actress wrote: “I don’t sleep much since I saw you“.
Penn said the interview was planned by del Castillo. Vicente Zambada-Niebla pleaded guilty to intent to distribute multiple tons of cocaine and heroin in 2013, and his reported knowledge of Guzman’s role could make a prosecution there more likely.
Actor Sean Penn shakes hands with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in Mexico during their meeting in October for a “Rolling Stone” interview.
An interior ministry security official, who has visited the jail on various occasions, said the problem with housing kingpins like “El Chapo” was that they could easily buy off the entire prison staff.
Guzman’s capture came six months after his dramatic escape through a mile-long tunnel he dug from his cell at the maximum-security Altiplano prison, west of Mexico City.
They are now advertising their “El Chapo” fantasy design on all social media platforms and the website has struggled to cope with demand (at time of writing, it had crashed again).
Later messages between the two appear to have been retrieved from a Blackberry device that a lawyer bought for del Castillo on Guzman’s orders.
Guzman’s attorney has said they will fight his extradition to the US, but Pena said the Mexican government is under renewed pressure to extradite the notorious drug trafficker.
“They are giving El Chapo some magnificent grounds to appeal”, Hope said.
Authorities raided his hideout in Durango state a few days after the meeting but Guzman grabbed his cook’s daughter and used her “as a human shield”, holding her in front of him as a helicopter hovered overhead, prompting soldiers to hold fire, a Mexican official said.
In the article, Penn said he was not allowed to record his in-person conversation with Guzman.
While Penn does not give the specific location of the interview, he said it was conducted in a mountainous Mexican jungle.
The actor told the Associated Press in a brief email conversation that he has “nothin” to hide.’ Mike Vigil, former DEA chief of global operations who has been briefed on the Guzman investigation by U.S. and Mexican law enforcement, said there is a ‘very strong possibility that Penn and Del Castillo are going to have to testify’.
A senior Mexican law official said authorities want to question Penn and del Castillo, and especially want to learn more about where the interview took place. The process began last summer, before Guzman’s escape, when the USA government formally requested his extradition, according to the source.
Instead, Chapo got away, he told authorities after his capture on Friday, by scarpering down the side of a hill and eventually meeting one of his bodyguards. Sean Penn is not someone I spend a lot of time thinking about.
