Joe Biden honors his late son during emotional Stephen Colbert interview
Mr. Biden has said ever since he became vice president in 2009 that he would be guided by his intention “to be the best vice president I can be”. He admitted that the culture of falsity in D.C. baffled him. Or maybe it’s that they just say the things they think we want to hear. Colbert offered condolences, and asked him for a story about Beau.
“He said, ‘Dad, I know how much you love me, so you got to promise me something“. Promise me youll be all right, because no matter what happens, Im going to be all right.. He has started discussing his grief more publicly and questioning his emotional readiness to run.
The vice president said he gets “an enormous sense of solace” from his belief in God. I’m not making this up. Biden’s wife and 1-year-old daughter were killed in a vehicle accident weeks after he was first elected to the Senate in 1972.
Vice President Joe Biden said he is overwhelmed at times by his sons death and unconvinced he could commit fully to being president, in an emotional interview that cast a deep pall over his deliberations about the 2016 presidential race. “Even in a crowd, you’re alone”.
That’s the stage we’re all watching with Biden and his family, and he’s inviting us in to watch because that’s the messy way of Joe Biden. He said, “The faith doesn’t always stay with you”.
“Joe’s agonizing is real”, USA congressman Bill Pascrell, a Biden friend since the late 1970s, told AFP. Years after, he confessed that he needed his sons more than they needed him, pulling strength from them during those trying times. For a moment, Colbert looked genuinely stumped; he smiled, closed his eyes.
“I was a hell of a success”, Biden told Colbert about his role as a father. Some of it relates to rituals; some of it relates to just comfort, what you’ve done your whole life. Reporter: It came during an interview with ABC’s David Muir a day after she said she had nothing to apologize for. “If she gets our support, there’s nothing that can stop her“.
“This is not, like, ancient history”, she said. Promise me, ‘ ” Biden said. “It all comes back”.
He also said the meeting focused on the more mundane policy topics like the Export-Import Bank and rebuilding U.S. infrastructure. Biden is putting his heart in our lap. “I’m being completely honest”. “No one has a proper for my part to hunt that workplace until they’re prepared to provide it 110 % of who they’re”. And he has risen to a height his family could scarcely have imagined in those hardscrabble years after the war in Scranton. I don’t let him give me a pedicure, but… “How can you-That’s not-I shouldn’t be saying this”. “I can’t….”, he added trailing off. Biden could never speak in a campaign quite the way that he spoke on Colbert. Trump has made this into a big positive and that could make it the same for Biden.
At the same time, however, Biden was apparently planning to do what political candidates often do in New York: meet with potential fundraisers from the finance industry. Not the most ringing of political endorsements, but it is somewhat an endorsement of him as a human being.
