Joey Logano, Ford Pull Off Weekend Sweep At Watkins Glen
A five-time victor at Sonoma and four-time victor at Watkins Glen global, Gordon is NASCAR’s leader in road course wins heading into Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at The Glen.
Joey Logano has finally picked up his second win of the season after coming close so many times.
The Sprint Cup Series will visit Watkins Glen this weekend for the last road course race of the season.
Full NASCAR Xfinity Series race results from Watkins Glen global. Harvick didn’t have a lot of momentum off the corner and ended up finishing third as Kyle Busch got him at the finish line.
In addition to the excitement during the race, Logano also had the opportunity to begin the construction work that will continue at the track.
Buescher extended his series lead to 24 points over Dillon and seventh-place finisher Chase Elliott.
Last year’s race victor, AJ Allmendinger, started on the pole, flanked by Martin Truex Jr. NASCAR waved the first yellow caution flag due to debris from Biffle’s tire. Busch must now maintain his points position until after the September 12th Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond to officially qualify for the Chase.
During a caution on lap 50, A.J. Allmendinger turned his engine off to coast and save fuel.
If the Boot is added, The Glen would still not be the longest track on the overall NASCAR circuit. The auto had to be pushed to the pits.
Clint Bowyer, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Sam Hornish Jr. and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top-10 finishers. The red flag lasted about seven minutes.
So, too, does Kyle Busch. That’s why he gets paid the big bucks. That’s why I drive the auto. He finished second in an IndyCar Series race here in 2007. When the green came out on Lap 61, Harvick quickly passed Kenseth for the top spot.
On the lap 61 restart, Harvick took the lead from Kenseth. On Sunday, while the race and the scramble at the finish that fans have come to enjoy at the road course did not quite happen, the ending was still unexpected. He had a win in 2009 when he was declared the victor at New Hampshire after rain halted the race with him leading. Another spin for Smith on lap 65 saw the #7 collected by Brendan Gaughan to bring out another caution, and at the restart there was contact between RCR team mates Dillon and Menard that fortunately avoided triggering another caution.
WGI announced on Sunday that it sold out its grandstand seating for this year’s race.
Joey Logano has to feel for Kevin Harvick.
Logano scored his second win of the season to go along with his season-opening Daytona 500 victory.
And he’s right. Gordon, who was 42nd two weeks ago at Indianapolis, has just one top-five finish since May.
Trying to stretch his fuel to the end of the race, Harvick instead ran out of gas in the next-to-last turn on the final lap, allowing Logano through.
“We’ve had really fast cars but the circumstances have just gotten the best of us”, said Harvick, who led a race-high 29 laps. He called it the “coolest weekend of my life”.
Richard Petty, who raced against Baker during his Cup career, said he was a friend as well as a competitor. He finished 41st and faces the possibility of missing the cut for the Chase.
