Joey Logano wins NASCAR race at MI, his 1st of year

Ironically, Logano, Elliott and third-place Kyle Larson set a record for becoming the youngest trio of drivers to finish in the top-three positions in NASCAR history. “This is a great place to win”, said Logano. It’s coming around. It’s going back to … you know how today we got to drive the cars. I am not alone up there as a young guy anymore. Shoot, I’m usually the youngest guy by a long shot, so it’s fun to be racing for the win with some guys that are close to my age up there racing for the win.

Over the past two seasons, Tony Stewart has had struggled massively and has had to deal with personal issues and injuries. Logano was the better restart driver and got what he needed.

NASCAR used the MI race as an experiment aimed at lowering downforce with a shorter rear spoiler and smaller front splitter.

“I definitely messed one up for them today”, Elliott said.

This whole NAPA group has been working so hard these past few weeks and that one was on me. “You can’t do dumb stuff and win these races”, he said. Back at the front, the lead would shuffle around a little bit, as Jimmie Johnson eyed Logano and Brad Keselowski.

It was his first victory of 2016, his 15th in Cup races and likely assured him of a spot in the NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs. Busch was the first driver out of the race (in 40th place), marking the fourth straight event in which he has finished 30th or worse… Truex’s Furniture Row Racing Toyota suffered slight damage. I don’t know. There is a lot of thought that goes into restarts with this race team, from every angle.

Allmendinger lost momentum and Elliott’s teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. tried to slip through. “I think as a driver and the race fan part of me and as somebody that cares a lot about the sport, that makes me feel good that you see people in the pipeline that are going to be there and be really competitive and put on good shows like that for years to come”.
