Joey Martin Feek: Hospice Roller coaster
Rory Feek wrote that his wife is strong despite being confined to her bed.
Joey has been embracing each moment with family, especially alongside the couple’s 21-month-old daughter Indiana.
Halfway through the song, Joey asked if she could lead, and he shared, “I followed her lead as we slowly two-stepped on her mama’s living room floor”.
Even though Rory admits that Joey has been unable to walk in days, she continues to show her optimism and light. She knew he was writing a blog about her health and carefully choosing stories and photos to share with readers.
“Like any woman, my wife is self-conscious about what cancer has done to her”, Rory wrote. Maybe it’s the pictures of her now bald head or the hospital bed in the middle of her family’s home or the way her dear daughter, Indiana, still looks at her with an innocence and a love that is only possible between a mother and daughter. Not a cancer patient. “So, though I’m only an amateur with a camera, I try to use my lens and words to lift Joey up”. My wife is braver than me.
“But today and the last few days have been incredible”, Rory noted. He wrote: ‘I was not positive what had took place – what the ache was in that she was feeling – so I attempted to place my arms round her & asked, “what’s wrong?’Then through her tears, she asserted the words….” Our story. And how she was inspiring others with her courage. “And how what I’ve been writing has been encouraging others in ways, too”. If his most recent post about the last time he danced with with his wife and partner doesn’t give you the feels, then you probably have an empty space in your chest where your heart should be. On Sunday, he posted about the struggle they’ve been having in deciding what to share.
The husband and songwriter also explained that just because his wife was in hospice didn’t mean that her death was imminent. He shared that hospice has been a “roller coaster”, and said every time Joey has a few bad days, she’ll bounce back from it and seem to be awake and alert, with “that familiar spark in her eye”.
“… She is so sharp and clear and her pain, for the most part, is so under control by the medicine that talking to her, you would think she’s her normal self”, wrote Rory, 50. Although he believes Joey is as handsome as she has ever been, Joey doesn’t always think so.
