John Boehner Orders U.S. Capitol Flags Lowered To Honor Chattanooga Shooting

Less than a week ago, four Marines were murdered, and a now a sailor has also succumbed to his injuries from the shooting.

Republican Tennessee Congressman Scott DesJarlais said during a Fox Business interview that President Barack Obama needs to order the flag at half-mast following last week’s Chattanooga shooting, and that he couldn’t imagine why he hadn’t already.

Obama ordered flags lowered after numerous nation’s mass shootings, including after the attacks at the Washington Navy Yard, at Fort Hood, and at Sandy Hook Elementary School, but not in the wake of the latest shooting deaths involving servicemen, reports Stars and Stripes.

Obama is scheduled to speak at the National VFW Convention in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, a 24-year-old electrical engineer from the city, attacked a recruiting office in a strip mall and fired a deadly barrage into a Navy and Marine Corps recruiting center nearby.

Several states’ governors, though, are ordering flags to fly at half-staff, including in Tennessee, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Arkansas and Massachusetts. His office did not return repeated calls for comment.

Joe Kasper, chief of staff for California GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter, who is seeking legislation that will allow military recruiters to be armed, criticized Obama for not issuing the order.

The recent massacre of USA service personnel at Chattanooga and the USA administrations reaction, or lack of it, has prompted former U.S. Marine veteran Mike “Shep” Shepard to question why USA flags have not been lowered as a mark of respect to the deceased.

“Across Chattanooga and the area… we’re seeing signs, big electronic billboards, saying ‘Chattanooga Strong.’ All the flags are at half-staff here…And a lot of people in Chattanooga are questioning; if flags are half-staff here, why are they not at half-staff at the White House?”
