John Brown: John Brown leads Cardinals with 4-65-1 in win
Picked as potential Super Bowl contenders, the Ravens (1-6) have struggled to close out games all season.
“It’s not a good day”.
Harbaugh’s fight with the officials began during the team’s first drive of the game. Urschel clearly motioned to Tolbert that he was reporting as an eligible receiver on the Ravens’ opening drive. Flacco was 26 for 40 for 252 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The play did not stand, however, because Urschel was flagged for illegal formation. He took a handoff to the left and ended up in the arms of defensive tackle Brandon Williams for what appeared to be a short gain. WR Darren Waller left the game in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury and could not return. The Ravens were leading 10-7, and the Baltimore defense had just forced a three-and-out. Arizona started at the 10, then Lardarius Webb and Brynden Trawick each had pass-interference penalties to give the Cardinals extra shots at the end zone.
The Ravens are having one of those seasons where nothing goes right. Johnson has given the Cardinals a big-play threat at running back, something they have never had since moving to Arizona in 1988.
Suffice to say the Ravens probably wouldn’t mind never seeing the officiating crew that consisted of referee Ronald Robert, line judge Mark Steinkerchner, back judge Greg Yette, umpire Carl Paganelli, side judge Scott Edwards, head linesman Jim Howey and field judge Aaron Santi again. The last Arizona player to do that was Edgerrin James in 2007. All six of their defeats have been one-possession games in which the Ravens had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final two minutes. Then, as Arizona was trying to milk the clock near the two-minute warning with Baltimore out of the timouts, the Cardinals ran a pass play on second down, for a few reason, and Carson Palmer was called for intentional grounding. “It just worked a little bit different”.
“We lost our phones, so [Flacco] couldn’t heard Marc [Trestman], offensive coordinator”, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said, noting there were issues throughout the game but especially at the end. “I thought for sure the call was going to get overturned”. As a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, he went 9-4 against them. “We didn’t play well enough to win a football game”, said Flacco, playing his 119th straight game. Guys were confused and rightfully so. During that drive, the Ravens could not use their wireless communications system to call in plays to quarterback Joe Flacco.
For instance, will Breshad Perriman be “The Burner” who was going to stretch the field in place of Torrey Smith, or will the Ravens have to go back into the National Football League draft and use a high pick to augment their undermanned receiver corps? And later, he scored what proved to be the game-winning four-yard touchdown. That’s true to a point.
This was just one of the difficulties the Ravens faced Monday.
