John Farrell diagnosed with lymphoma
Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell revealed that doctors found Stage 1 lymphoma while doing his hernia surgery Monday in Detroit, and he will start treatment “in the coming days”. He said he has lymphoma, a type of cancer that attacks the immune system. Farrell, 53, returned to watch the team take batting practice immediately after the surgery, but was unable to stay for their game against the Marlins. Torey Lovullo will serve as interim manager during his absence. He previously managed the Blue Jays for two seasons, and was Boston’s pitching coach from 2007-10. But the Red Sox couldn’t follow up that success in 2014, finishing in last place, where the current year’s team now resides as well.
“Your heart just stops”, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia said (via Boston 7News reporter Alex Corddry) after learning of Farrell’s diagnosis.
