John Kerry To Meet Buhari On Boko Haram, Economy Next Week
A statement from the U.S. department of state disclosed that he would be meeting president Kenyatta of Kenya and Muhammadu Bhuari of Nigeria during his visits where counter terrorism issues are expected to be discussed.
Kerry then visits Nigeria’s cities of Sokoto and Abuja on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the top United States diplomat, before arriving Nigeria, will visit Nairobi on Monday for talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on “regional security issues and counter-terrorism cooperation, as well as bilateral issues”.
According to Assistant Secretary and US Department of State spokesman, John Kirby, the meeting will also focus corruption and the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle it.
It stated that the Secretary will travel to Sokoto and Abuja between August 23 to 24. “He will also meet with northern governors and religious leaders”, Kirby said on Friday.
Ahead of the trip, Human Rights Watch wrote a letter to the secretary of state.
The rights group also urged Kerry to press Kenya for more reforms to police forces that have been accused of widespread abuses, and to press Nigeria to make “meaningful reforms” to a military that also has been accused of massive rights violations, including killings.
In a similar development, the US Secretary of State will travel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 24 to 25 August for a series of meetings with senior Saudi leaders, his counterparts from the Gulf Cooperation Council, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen. It has seen four of its sponsored facilities attacked in Yemen this year.
