John Kerry Visits France almost Five Days After Paris Attacks
Two have been charged with “participation in terrorist activity” and “preparation of a terrorist attack” for their alleged involvement in the attacks carried out on Friday, while the other five, including Salah Abdeslam’s brother, Mohamed Abdeslam, have been released. “We still don’t know the number of persons implicated in the attacks”, prime minister Manuel Valls said.
He said: “Of course I call on him to turn himself over to the police”.
The two women and one man were arrested as they left a job center at around 9:30 a.m., according to local media reports.
“We have mobilised 115,000 police, gendarmes and military over the whole of our national territory to ensure the protection of French people”, BBC quoted Cazeneuve as saying.
It has emerged the 28-year-old Belgian may also have been involved in four of six thwarted attacks in France this year, including an assault by a gunman on a high-speed train which was thwarted by three Americans. He has been identified through a Syrian passport found at the scene that identifies him as a 25-year-old born in Idlib, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins’ office said in a statement.
He sought the support of the cities’ mayors, asking for the deployment of thousands more security forces in France’s communes and extra security checks of people and vehicles. He said France would do so despite concerns raised by ultra-right nationalist leaders that refugees might pose a security threat to the country. “They will continue as long as necessary”, he added.
The defence ministry said a command centre and training centre were destroyed. “The worldwide community must rally around that spirit”.
Hollande plans to visit Washington within the next week to meet with President Barack Obama to discuss further cooperation on fighting terrorism and dealing with the crisis in Syria, which has served as the incubator for the Islamic State movement.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks in the French capital on Friday, killing at least 129 people, stating it was in retaliation for air raids in Iraq and Syria.
Hollande has promised a “merciless” fight against ISIS in response to the attack.
Abaaoud was involved in a planned attack on churchgoers in the Paris suburb of Villejuif and investigations are continuing into his possible involvement in an attempted attack on a Thalys train between Amsterdam and Paris in August, he said.
