John Lennon was shot 35 years ago

That an admittedly troubled and occasionally conflicted man sought to elevate himself toward lofty heights and to spread notions of peacefulness and compassion through his music, only to become the victim of senseless violence, was an irony that seemed too much to bear for many of his fans.

On the night of December 8, 1980, I was soldering circuit boards in my apartment above a bar in downtown Washington, D.C., when I heard the news. Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his murder and is eligible for parole next year. At a parole hearing previous year, he apologized for the killing saying, “I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory”.

The December 2 attack was executed by a married couple, Syed Farook, a 28-year-old U.S. citizen who worked for the local county in environmental matters, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, a Pakistani national.

Thirty-five years after his death, hundreds are expected to gather across the street at Strawberry Fields in Central Park to remember Lennon. The memorial is located on the west side of the park right across from the Dakota, and feature the famous Imagine mosaic.

After the Beatles broke up in 1970, Lennon continued writing songs and recording. The album, which includes songs by his wife, is based on Lennon’s experiences over the five years, during which he kept house, cooked and cared for their son.

Starr did not come into the band until 1962 – a year before the Beatles hit the top of the charts in Britain with “Please Please Me”.
