John Mara says Giants have not been allowed to examine JPP
Mara said he personally exchanged text messages with Pierre-Paul, the 26-year-old defensive end who has made two Pro Bowl teams, a few days after July 4.
Mara was especially disappointed that Giants senior vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes and special assistant Jessie Armstead were rebuffed when they tried to visit Pierre-Paul in a Florida hospital.
New York Giants co-owner John Mara, addressing the media ahead of training camp, said of his team’s star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, “I don’t know how many fingers he has”. “We want him to be here and finish his career as a Giant”. “We don’t know how extensive the damage is”, Mara told reporters at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford.
“I don’t know what they think they are hiding”, Coughlin said.
Coughlin said he texted Pierre-Paul shortly after the injury but got no response.
Asked if this was a “win or else” season, Mara said, “You can make that statement every year”. We have access to some of the best doctors in the world, and I think it would be in his best interest to be here for those reasons. New York reportedly rescinded a $60 million contract offer to Pierre-Paul after the accident, and there have thus far been no new developments on that front. Pierre-Paul would be able to sign with another team, but the Giants may have no choice if he continues his seclusion. “We’re just going through the usual things that you go through”.
The hazy aftermath of Pierre-Paul’s injury and the lack of knowledge the Giants now possess regarding the situation makes Mara’s initial reaction to the incident that much more fitting. Forget about his hand for a second. Obviously, that’s not an ideal scenario for Pierre-Paul, so there likely would have to be some sort of agreement between player and team before Pierre-Paul signed the tender and showed up at training camp. And it’s happening in a year when Coughlin had to reach into his past to re-hire Steve Spagnuolo to reignite his sputtering defense. Now add the hand injury. He has totaled 21 sacks for the three seasons that followed combined.
It’s hard to understand why Pierre-Paul is avoiding the Giants help. “The organization has been behind me 100 percent”.
If he hits the market next season I can definitely see Bill Belichick kicking the tires on this once great player because keep in mind he is still young at only 26 years old.
Pierre-Paul was in a fireworks accident on July 4.
