John Mara: ‘Very disappointing’ that Giants have not seen Jason Pierre-Paul
Once Pierre-Paul signs the tender, the Giants would be able (and are likely) to place him on the non-football injury list, which would allow them to determine when he returns to the field and also allow them to not pay him for games missed.
Three and-a-half weeks later, Pierre-Paul still hasn’t responded, he told Vrentas.
The Giants remain unsure as to when that will be.
Jason Pierre-Paul blew off his finger in a Fourth of July fireworks accident and still hasn’t contacted the Giants, which prompted owner John Mara to say Tuesday the defensive end is not “receiving very good advice”. The former University of South Florida star endured a fireworks incident on July 4 which led to his right index finger being amputated all while refusing to meet with team officials during his hospital stay earlier this month.
Speaking with The New York Post, Mara called it “very disappointing” that Pierre-Paul refused to see team doctors after the incident. He reportedly won’t sign his $US14.8 million tender until he knows he can pass the team’s physical, and be medically cleared to play, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.
“He has told people that he’s fine and he’s going to be ready to play, but until we see the hand, we’re just not sure”, Mara told the Post.
Giants players report to training camp Thursday.
“He texted me back right away, said he was going to be fine, that it’s just a little bump in the road and that he’ll be back as good as ever”, Mara told the Post. Pierre-Paul, who technically is still not under contract with the team as a result of his refusal to sign his franchise tag, is not expected to attend. After that, I think I may have used some language that I wouldn’t like my grandchildren to hear me use. “Putting those things together is very easy”.
The hazy aftermath of Pierre-Paul’s injury and the lack of knowledge the Giants now possess regarding the situation makes Mara’s initial reaction to the incident that much more fitting.
