John McCain Urges Donald Trump to Apologise to US Military Families
But he stopped short of calling for Trump to drop out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination, as others have done.
While conflict on key issues should be expected, that didn’t clear the way for Trump’s unwarranted shot at McCain. I like people that weren’t captured, okay? He has been surging in some early polls and has refused to back down from his criticism of McCain, and the Republican establishment is anxious about the damage he may be doing to the party’s brand.
In perhaps another attempt to smooth things over, McCain’s former running mate, Sarah Palin, told CNN late on Monday that she viewed both men as heroes.
Trump was addressing a gathering of religious conservatives in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday, when the moderator referred to McCain as a war hero. To which the moderator replied, “He’s a war hero”. “John McCain’s status as a war hero”, pollster Gary Langer wrote for ABC. He was a war hero because he was captured. “I think you know what I’m referring to there”. McCain. I used to like him a lot.
“While it may appear that this is a disaster on Trump’s part, it may prove that Mr. Trump’s willingness to say virtually anything that flies into his head and send it right out of his mouth is going to capture more support than some of the pundits expect”, Towery explained.
“The motto of our state is smiling faces and lovely places-I don’t think he quite fits that motto”, Graham said. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest asserted veterans “are entitled to an apology”.
Sen McCain responded to the remarks and called on Mr Trump to apologise to all veterans.
“Somehow to denigrate that in any way is offensive, I think, to most of our veterans”.
McCain says Trump should apologize to veterans for the statement, but Trump is standing by his statements. “@realDonaldTrump crossed the line in showing disrespect to a distinguished American”.
“It’s not just absurd”, said Florida Sen.
The poll found that Trump was second in Iowa only to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who had 22 percent.
Recent remarks from Trump – he also unleashed racist rhetoric related to immigration – have been so inflammatory that even his GOP brethren want him to tone it down. The upcoming GOP debate, with its poll-driven criteria for candidate participation, will feature Trump at the expense of lesser-known candidates who have actually run for office or served as Republicans in the past. And the sacrifice and hardship of those who were prisoners of war should never be diminished or questioned, certainly not for political reasons.
