John Mikel Obi: Midfielder returns to London after Rio 2016
Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi has said that he is hopeful of impressing Antonio Conte after helping Nigeria win the bronze medal at the Olympic Games. His contributions in terms of passes and creating chances for his teammates to score was one of the major highlights of Mikel’s outstanding display in Rio.
“Eleven seasons, Eleven trophies and I’m not done yet”, Mikel Obi wrote on Twitter.
Nigeria’s U-23 side Dream Team VI won bronze in Brazil with a 3-2 victory over Honduras Obi hopes he can lead the Super Eagles to Russian Federation. “I’m really pleased, really happy and I still can’t believe it”.
Obi says that Nigerian athletes in other disciplines can take heart from the football team’s display and urges the country’s sports authorities-including the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF)-to prepare better for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The competition in Rio was a marginal improvement on Nigeria’s performance at the 2012 Olympics in London, where the team failed to win any medals at all.
Mikel Obi, Katsuya Takasu and coach Samson Siasia. But it was too late for the Central American team to stop Nigeria from taking home a bronze medal. But it is a positive thing for me that I have been playing well in Brazil and I’m in good shape.
This came few days after Siasia had complained about the poor working conditions for the Dream Team VI, as they prepared for the Games. He not only played well, he also motivated the squad with his leadership qualities. When he came, he shook hands with us and after shaking the players, he asked where is the coach?.
Nigeria, who recently appointed German Gernot Rohr as technical adviser are drawn in Group B of World Cup qualifying with Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia. But first of all, I want to celebrate with my family, put it around my daughters’ neck, take pictures and make sure they get to see what daddy achieved.
