John Oliver Recaps Hillary Clinton’s ‘Full Pitbull Cos-play’ at the DNC
John Oliver is usually not one to lose his cool when he goes after people on Last Week Tonight.
Oliver’s main gripe with Trump (this week) was his response to the stirring speech Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim Army captain who was killed in Iraq, delivered at the DNC accusing Trump of having “sacrificed nothing”.
“Because Trump hasn’t said one insane thing”, Oliver continued, “he’s said thousands of insane things, each of which blunts the effect of the others”. It’s the bed of nails principle: if you step on one nail, it hurts you, but if you step on a thousand nails, no single one stands out and you’re fine.
Was Donald Trump at the “Hunger Games” or GOP convention?
The full video can be enjoyed below. Oliver had kind words for First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech, thought former President Bill Clinton relived his relationship with Hillary “seemingly in real time”, couldn’t understand why Meryl Streep dressed up as “a plastic tablecloth on the Fourth of July”, and believed that Joe Biden will have a post-White House career as the “most inspiring SoulCycle instructor ever”. The world is receiving us like we have never seen.
So where can you catch tonight’s episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and when will all of the action go down?
“The Republican Party doesn’t seem to now exist”, Oliver said. In the aforementioned interview, Stephanopoulos asked Trump to reply to Khan’s question of what sacrifices he’s made – to which Trump discussed creating jobs… through his many private (often outsourced) corporate endeavors. Those “are self-serving half-truths”, Oliver said, expressing the worry that “we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged, sociopathic narcissist that the simple Presidential duty of comforting the families of fallen soldiers may actually be beyond him”.
