John Terry: Why “top player” Radamel Falcao will succeed at Chelsea
However, since Mourinho’s return, Terry has been an ever-present in Chelsea’s line-up and played every minute of their Premier League title win last season.
The player could make his debut for Chelsea on English soil in the Community Shield clash with Arsenal this weekend, as Diego Costa continues to nurse a damaged hamstring.
Such is their quality that Chelsea often won games long before the end, but keeping Falcao in reserve for whenever they need a goal isn’t a bad option, and one that they might just find can get the best out of their new arrival.
That means getting as many players close to him as possible, removing the isolation factor he sometimes experienced at Manchester United and giving him the opportunity to become something of a “Super-Sub”.
Prior to his arrival in the Premier League, Falcao had a reputation of being something of a goal machine given his record at both Porto and Atletico Madrid – but had been recovering from a serious knee injury picked up during his first season at Monaco.
The centre-back’s consistent form was a far cry from the struggles he had endured in previous seasons, most notably 2012-13 when, after injury interrupted the early part of Terry’s season, then-Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said he could not guarantee him a place in the starting lineup.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed his plans for new signing Radamel Falcao.
“We were losing against Barcelona and I took Eden Hazard off because I was not anxious about the result otherwise he would have played the whole game”. But Falcao came in and the team was direct and objective and he was holding the ball very well. They closed the lines and played in the opposition half.
“For me the question of the winning mentality, I never know what it is”, he said.
I use it to my advantage because nine times out of 10 if I can stay focused we are going to come out as winners.
Mourinho also confirmed that England global defender Gary Cahill would also be fit for selection after suffering a blow to the nose against Barcelona. “We are delighted to have him here”.
