John Wall doesn’t think he’ll make Team USA in Rio Olympics
He is one of six guards in the 34-man pool assembled in Vegas by USA Basketball and he is nowhere near the top of the pecking order. Steph Curry had an incredible last year and just won the World Cup. He had learned however, that this was not the case, stating “I think they might not have a minicamp next year”.
Washington Wizard’s point guard John Wall told Ben Standig of CSN Washington he doesn’t think he will make the Team USA basketball squad that will head to Rio de Janiero for the Olympics next summer.
Then Wall offered another name: “Kyrie”, as in Kyrie Irving, the Cavs guard who not only is a teammate of the highly influential LeBron James but who played for Krzyzewski at Duke.
“Oh, yeah. Ten times out of 10 they’ll be on the team”, Wall told CSN Washington.
“But I’ve been overlooked my whole career”. His humble statement of not being able to make the cut has been a far cry from his previous rant after he didn’t make the cut for the World Cup. Russell will probably be on the team. Admittedly, however, a big problem is that Wall isn’t as lethal a scorer as either of those two, particularly when it comes to outside shooting, which is a major boon in worldwide competition.
Wall mentioned Chris Paul and Stephen Curry of course as two of the men in front of him. “So, I probably won’t make it”, Wall said.
It’s too early to close the door on a possible opportunity for John Wall to make the USA Basketball roster, but he understands that his chances of participating over a number of players are low.
You have to hand it to Wall. It would seem that that group will be taken out of the 18 players listed below. Instead of moping or complaining, Wall is going to use this as motivation next season. The camp, which was more of a social gathering than a substantive assessment of skill, would have done little to help Rose continue his preparation for the upcoming season. But if that doesn’t happen, it sounds like he won’t be that upset. That could potentially open the door for someone like John Wall.
