Johnny Depp to Star as ‘Invisible Man’ For Universal
The original 1933 film starred Claude Rains as H.G. Wells’ notoriously shallow character who loses his visible presence – and his conscience with it – while experimenting with laboratory chemicals. And the studio’s monster madness continues with similarly massive star power, with the news that Johnny Depp has signed on to play the title role in The Invisible Man. At this stage we don’t have any details on a potential writer or director.
Deadline reports that Johnny Depp will star in “The Invisible Man”.
Kurtzman and Morgan have been hashing out the monsters universe in a writers room, but you can not argue with the studio’s wisdom in putting those classic franchises on the slab and reanimating them.
Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, the architects of the Monsters Universe, will produce the big-budget movie for Universal.
In addition to Depp, Universal also landed Tom Cruise for The Mummy, which Kurtzman is directing. At this rate, we’ll probably see Will Smith star in The Wolf Man in 2018. Universal already stumbled in its first effort to kick off the monsters franchise with 2014’s Dracula Untold, which lacked a standout star and was a total dud both critically and financially.
Executive Vice President Jon Mone and Vice President Jay Polidoro will oversee production on behalf of Universal. The Invisible Man Returns followed in 1940 with The Invisible Woman arriving later that same year.
