Johnson wins BMW Championship by three strokes over Casey
Paul Casey sure didn’t have an answer.
Choi mounted a strong challenge on the front nine before three straight bogeys from the 10th derailed his glory bid. I played one of my better weeks and I feel like my game is in better shape now. Their PGA Tour seasons are now over.
“Better safe than sorry”, Day’s manager, Bud Martin, said. “You just don’t see this type of talent come along very often”.
Eighteen birdies and one eagle putt later, Johnson was at 18-under 198 and closing in on his third victory of the year. It was red, just like the model world No. 1 Jason Day uses. It would mark the first season in which he has won three events. Day’s three victories do not include a major, though he won the WGC-Dell Match Play and the Players Championship.
“We’ll probably get an MRI just to double check”. Not that they were rooting against Dustin Johnson, but certainly there was a sense that when he matched up his physical gifts with all the other elements that go into playing golf. well, look out. He is hitting wedges good enough for multiple birdie chances.
Johnson responded by draining a 20-footer at the next and picking up another shot at the fifth, before restoring his four-shot cushion with back-to-back birdies from the seventh.
“There’s still a lot of room for improvement”. And he still torched the place.
On Sunday, Johnson gave only brief glimmers of hope to Casey, his lone challenger on this day.
After Johnson birdied the first to extend his advantage to four, the overnight leader saw his deficit halved when he three-putted the next from distance and Casey’s stunning approach left him a kick-in gain.
Castro was five clear of five players, including the best-placed Australian Adam Scott (71), who all finished on 12-under in fourth place. “There’s not that many guys out here who have that ability to deal with good and bad”. Johnson smiled at the question. At the U.S. Open past year at Chambers Bay, his ball for reasons unknown stayed up on a ridge, and his 12-foot eagle putt for the victory turning to a three-putt par to finish one shot behind Jordan Spieth. That lasted as long as it took Johnson to line up his 18-foot eagle putt and pour it in to restore his three-shot margin. So overcome with emotion, he barely pumped his fist. I hold my head up high that it was a great fight. He has little use for any of the attention-grabbing theatrics of his superstar peers.
Right down to his putter. He recalled that his brother and caddie, Austin, had a similar model. It was perfectly DJ.
Casey missed five fairways, his most this week in any round, yet still managed to keep bogeys off his card with smart shots out of the wet rough and solid putting.
