Jokanovic wants Fulham to spend after promotion triumph
“It is very disappointing”, said Aston Villa full-back and former Hull City player Ahmed Elmohamady.
“I have two years left on my contract, so we will see”.
By winning the sport’s richest single game, Fulham guaranteed future additional revenue of at least 160 million pounds ($210 million) from prize money and broadcast deals, according to the sports business group of accountancy firm Deloitte.
“I don’t know (whether I will still be at Fulham next season)”. The match was played at Wembley Stadium, the iconic English soccer venue that Khan offered to buy for an estimated $835 million in April.
There was only misery for Villa as they missed out on promotion on the 36th anniversary of the club’s famous European Cup final victory over Bayern Munich.
Since arriving on loan at Fulham, the striker has played 20 times, with 15 wins, three draws and only two defeats, scoring 12 times and helping the West London club into the Premier League.
But things did not go well for Villa at Wembley.
Villa, led by former England and Chelsea defender John Terry, were terrible in the first half but they revived after the break. “We were unlucky and needed too many chances”.
Jokanovic had vowed to take advantage of Villa’s veterans, labelling them “an old and exhausted team, they are going to show some weaknesses”. In total, he was fouled nine times, matching the record this season – James Maddison was also fouled nine times for Norwich against Wolves.
Teenager Ryan Sessegnon received the ball midway inside Villa’s half, evaded a tackle, and turned to play a through ball that Cairney calmly slotted past keeper Sam Johnstone. Tom Cairney, the twinkling Fulham captain, just about held back the tears in interviews pitch-side. Ryan Fredericks certainly seemed to let the occasion better of him when he stamped on Jack Grealish on the half-hour mark.
Despite being under pressure throughout the second half, Tom Cairney’s first-half finish proved enough for their often-promising season to end in glory. “We trust he’ll be at his best level”.
To the Cottagers the spoils; to the Villa the heartbreak.
Villa had its first opportunity after 14 minutes when Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli delivered a clearance straight to Robert Snodgrass.
