Jon Stewart Signs Off from “The Daily Show”
After nearly 16 years presenting The Daily Show, America’s number one satirist Jon Stewart bid farewell to the hit programme which has mercilessly mocked current affairs, politicians and the media.
Comedian Trevor Noah is taking over for Stewart, but Stewart said the viewers are the ones who should pick up where he left off with his last broadcast.
Stephen Colbert, who went on to his own Colbert Report before nabbing the plum job replacing David Letterman on CBS Late Show, got the last word – and the most air time. “We owe you because we learnt from you“, Colbert said, bringing Stewart to tears.
After Stewart’s lecture, it was time for another Jersey boy, Bruce Springsteen to end the show with not one but two songs, ending with “Born to Run“.
But I think my favorite part was the not quite laugh-out-loud, but perfectly weird, “Too Many Cooks”-style, single-take tribute to the entire “Daily Show” production team, full of ridiculous nicknames and inside jokes”.
Things kicked off with all The Daily Show correspondents Jessica Williams, Hasan Minaj and Jordan Klepper getting help from some of the more senior contributors from over the years, including Aasif Mandvi, Al Madrigal, John Hodgman, Lewis Black, Kristen Schaal and Samantha Bee.
It probably meant much more to Stewart and his gang than it did to viewers.
When Colbert strayed off the script, Stewart knew that he was in for a bumpy ride, but no matter how badly he tried to stop him from continuing, he couldn’t.
Will Jon Stewart’s $80 million net worth decrease after his retirement? “It is one of the few times I’ve known you to be dead wrong”, Colbert said, calling Stewart “infuriatingly good” at his job.
For more than a decade, Stewart has grilled both democrats and republicans on important issues facing our country like health care.
Stewart reserved a final address to us, the troops he’s trained to be suspicious of anyone in power or, as he calls them, “bulls******s”, says Tucker.
John Oliver was there; so was Wyatt Cenac, who’d recently revealed that Stewart lost his temper when Cenac criticised his impression of Herman Cain, circa 2012.
And there we have it. While it was a bit of a slog, Stewart’s last Daily Show, in a way, was a stark forecast of the void he will leave behind now that he’s officially departed.
Stewart opened the show at his desk to wild cheers, stating simply “Welcome to ‘The Daily Show,’ my name is Jon Stewart“, adding “I’ve got big news”. So rather than saying goodbye or goodnight, I’m just going say I’m going to go get a drink.
