Jonathan Martin to retire
In a report from an independent investigation into the bullying scandal, Martin said the harassment drove him into a depression and he twice contemplated suicide. “That’s one of the scariest things you can say to a person because you can wonder about what can go wrong and what state it can leave you with”.
“The locker room is going to be politically incorrect…”
Martin becomes the fifth player from the 2014 49ers to retire this offseason, joining Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith and Anthony Davis.
The Panthers, who added Martin off waivers in March, had penciled him in as Michael Oher’s backup at left tackle.
Former 49ers tackle Jonathan Martin, 25, a standout at Stanford who was a second-round pick in 2012, is retiring from the NFL, the NFL Network reported. But Martin struggled last season as a replacement starter (nine games) and was waived this offseason. Carolina appears content to let Mike Remmers and rookie Daryl Williams battle for the right tackle spot. David Foucault, Martin Wallace and Nate Chandler are the other tackles on Carolina’s roster.
Now Martin will walk away from the game, and begin a new chapter in his life.
Martin left the Dolphins midway through his second NFL season amid allegations of bullying from teammate Richie Incognito.
