Jonathan Rhys Meyers in powerful trailer for new gay rights movie Stonewall
What followed was a series of explosive riots – riots and demonstrations that would go on to become a defining moment in America’s quest for equality.
There is no Irish release date at present for Stonewall.
“Stonewall” will premiere at the Toronto worldwide Film Festival and open in theaters September 25. This trailer is uber dramatic and I’m not just talking about Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ intense stare-though it is, as usual, intense as hell. The petition claims that the preview shows that the efforts of non-white transgender women and drag queens will not be depicted in the movie.
When Stonewall, the whitewashed trans-history-erasing movie comes out, save your hard earned T-bills. Yes, the riot actually happened, that’s not made up, but everything else in this film appears to be. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven. The two people who are universally recognised as starting the riots aren’t even in the film! You can make a tax-deductible donation over here.
Changing history like that is wrong.
At least they can take some comfort in the fact that Emmerich is working outside of his comfort zone. Not only is it historically inaccurate but it’s totally god damn disrespectful.
To be fair, it’s entirely possible that Danny’s brick-throwing scene might mark some other point of the riot and not its beginning; perhaps Marsha P. Washington will get her due credit as the one who set things off. This despite the historical movement being led in no small part by people of colour.
Here it is at last – the film that tells the dramatic and courageous story of our community’s historic uprising.
