Jones crowned Australian Open champion
Spieth’s 67 was the best round of the day and put him on seven-under, two shots better than Rhein Gibson (68) with two other Australians, Lincoln Tighe (70) and Aron Price (70), in a share of fourth on four-under. With gusty winds again affecting play on The Australian Golf Club course where Jones is a member, the US -based Australian had a 54-hole total of 10-under 203.
Matt Jones is the 2015 Australian Open champion, producing his biggest tournament triumph on home soil at the club where he played pennant golf as a teenager, The Australian. Adam Scott rebounded from a 73 on Fri.to shoot 68, together with an eagle on the 18th.
Scott, who started on the back nine Friday, three-putted from 15 feet on the par-3 11th, and did the same on the par-4 sixth.
“But playing this golf course, the front 9 is the tough 9 for me”.
“I had a couple of Bundies”, he said.
At the Australian Open alone, a pair of horror bogeys in the first round meant he needed four birdies on the back nine to salvage par and he made the cut despite a second round in which he failed to once beat par.
Pampling would have to cancel his flight – and the bookies dramatically reel in their odds – as the 46-year-old produced one of the greatest single-round performances in the Australian Open’s 100-year history.
“I struck it nicely, there’s not too much room to land it up there”. “It’s two extra shots that you do’t expect”.
Spieth looked down and out after three bogeys in his first four holes of the third round, but clawed his way back with birdies at the fifth, six and ninth holes — dampened by a bogey at the eighth.
“Right now I think the goal is going to be to try and shoot 10 under on the weekend and I think that should be good enough”. So it’s in my hands.
Adam Scott wrapped up his round with a birdie on the 18th hole to tie Jones at -7 and overthrow Pampling for the clubhouse lead.
“I’m in the British Open so hopefully I can win that one”, he said.
“They’ve just gotten a little bit easier day-to-day and my putting’s been just slightly better today, and so I do believe that I have yet to peak at this tournament”.
He was even tied for the lead later in the afternoon until Matt Jones pulled away for a one-stroke victory.
