Jones: No need to panic after Arsenal draw
A THUMPING last-gasp header from striker Olivier Giroud salvaged Arsenal a point and denied Manchester United a deserved victory in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford this afternoon (Saturday).
David Moyes’ relegation-threatened side had lost four of their five home league games this season, but they went in front through Jermain Defoe’s 150th Premier League goal in the 34th minute.
In a rare attack by the visitors, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reached the byline and crossed for his fellow substitute to head home at the far post with Arsenal’s first effort on target all match.
“I thought we were going to have the ball”, Mourinho said.
‘”The players who came in made a massive difference today”.
“I thought even when they had a spell of possession they never really created anything to test us”.
Comparing with the rival mangers such as Klopp, Conte and Pep, Mourinho seems to be a tad slow in bringing out the best in his team and the fans too feel the same.
Wayne Rooney slammed the response to his late-night antics on England duty as “disgraceful” and vowed not to be consigned to the worldwide scrapheap over the incident.
Jones has learned the importance of patience the hard way as the talented defender has been beset with injury problems over recent years. Man United blocked us well as well, they were very organised.
Mourinho was incensed earlier in the match when he felt his side should have been given a penalty when Nacho Monreal hauled down Antonio Valencia, referee Andre Marriner waving play on.
“We have a lot of work to do, we know that”.
Mourinho recalled the “Marcos Rojo and Paul Pogba situations”, to get the second goal but it didn’t happen and the team were punished.
“If we just focus on Burnley, Stoke and Arsenal – nine points easily”.
“It is insane”, the 24-year-old said. “With such an intense game he was having some cramps in the last period, which is normal”, he added. We are in a very hard Premier League. Because I got to the clubs and always won right away. While Arsenal’s defence has arguably been Arsenal’s weakest link in past seasons, they showed their grit against United, producing a solid defensive performance Koscielny and Mustafi at the heart of the defence. “It is insane. If we had won today, then we would have been three points behind Arsenal”, he said. “They have a week to prepare for each game and are in a much better position to improve than we are”.
